Even though we have many problems in our nation, I’m grateful to be an American this Independence Day. If you are an American, I hope you will pause to be grateful, too.

This summer, I’m on a mission to give you the best encouragement I can give. So, I’m writing a series of short posts called Encouragement One-2-One, featuring 1 thought, 2 quotes and 1 question.

So here are my Independence Day thoughts One-2-One.

1 Good Thought

Be grateful for your country, for it’s the home God gave you.

Even if you’re struggling to be a proud American right now, you can still be a grateful American.

The Bible tells us why:
“From one man God made all the people of the world. Now they live all over the earth. He decided exactly when they should live. And he decided exactly where they should live.” (Acts 17:26)

In other words, God chose for you to live right here, right now. In His great wisdom, He gave you a country because you need a home–a people to belong to and a place where you can share His love with others. You can trust that God has a good purpose (Jer. 29:11) for your life here, even if it doesn’t seem good at times.

This Independence Day, here are some blessings to be grateful for:

  1. Freedom: the majority of the world’s people lack basic freedoms. Many cannot practice their religion, speak freely or be educated (especially women). Since we were born with these freedoms, it’s easy to take them for granted, so this Independence Day, be grateful for the freedoms you have.
  2. Beauty: God gave us such a beautiful land to live in! Go outside, drink in the beauty and thank Him for it. Being grateful enables you to enjoy God’s gifts more fully. So be grateful for His beautiful handiwork. This video will inspire you.
  3. Opportunity: Tony Blair once said: “A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in . . . and how many want to get out.” Millions flock to our country because of the endless opportunities it provides. Be thankful and make the most of every opportunity God has given you to love and to serve.

America isn’t perfect–but no nation ever has been or ever will be. Not one. Let’s be grateful as we work to make it better.

This Independence Day be grateful for your country, for it’s the home God gave you.

2 Good Quotes

“God gave us the whole earth to love, but since our hearts are small,
He ordained for each one a special place–a home–to love above all.” ~ Anonymous

“Being grateful all the time isn’t easy. But it’s when you least feel thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. Gratitude can transform any situation. It alters your vibration, moving you from negative energy to positive. It’s the quickest, easiest most powerful way to effect change in your life — this I know for sure.”  ~ Oprah Winfrey
